Ballylagan Guesthouse and Tearoom is the result of extensive refurbishment of a vacant early nineteenth century farmhouse, east of Straid, County Antrim. Refurbishment works included internal refurbishment, removal of an existing two-storey return and the addition of a single-storey garden room. The completed project contains four ensuite bedrooms, library, commercial kitchen and from which the proprietors run an organic tea room which complements the adjacent organic farm shop.
The design approach taken was to recognise the architectural heritage of the existing buildings and to ensure sympathetic treatment of the existing historic fabric. The building was restored to its original nineteenth century footprint. A single-storey tea room extension contemporary in design opens onto a landscaped courtyard. Sensitive internal refurbishment has retained many of the existing features of the building.
