Ireland has a very distinctive rural vernacular built heritage which derives its appearance from its response to local landscapes and the use of a combination of locally-sourced and imported building materials. The Mourne Homesteads Project involved the restoration of a total of seven dwellings in three phases. The total building cost for all three phases was £1.3M.

Penny’s House, Loughbrickland, Co. Down

Penny’s House a grade B+ listed building located south of the town of Banbridge, County Down is a superb example of a two-storey eighteenth century vernacular farmhouse of simple but pleasing proportions with detached stable buildings. In 2000, the practice completed a major restoration and extension project to the property which was in an advanced state of disrepair and dereliction.

Mount Prospect, Dungiven

Client: Private

Mount Prospect is a fine example of an eighteenth century vernacular hill farm situated one mile from Banagher Glen National Nature Reserve. In 1999 the practice undertook a careful re-modelling of the existing range of outbuildings to provide fi ve-star tourist accommodation in the form of three self-catering holiday cottages, now named Magheramore Courtyard.
